Atal Bihari Vajpayee ( 25 December 1924 – 16 August 2018), was an Indian politician who thrice served as the Prime Minister of India. Being the member of the Indian Parliament for over four decades, he was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house, ten times, and twice to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house. Conferred with India`s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by then the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee in 2015.
He was a visionary and a man of the masses. The scale of his popularity in the aftermath of the 1984 Lok Sabha poll amongst the masses was such, that, in 1985 when the Karnataka Express leaving Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway station was carrying almost the entire BJP leadership. Hundreds of BJP workers would surround the bogey where Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the party president, was seated, at any halt in the train journey. The sight of Vajpayee charged up his supporters.
There are a million things we can learn from a man as strong as Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He understood the pulse of people and always believed in teamwork. Not only his appeal in the masses he always opted for a carefully crafted path. His words were his swords. He had the persona to realize his goals, and then strive hard to achieve them was the reason he could lead such organizations. His leadership skills, not losing calm in the toughest and hardest of times, all these and many more qualities made him the man he was. If we instil even 10% of his qualities in ourselves, we might as well achieve our goal.
He passed away at the age of 93, On 16 August 2018, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital in New Delhi. With his sad demise, he left the whole country in a state of mourn and blackout. We not only lost visionary but also a true patriot. We will always remember him in our hearts, for the impressions he has left are indelible. May his soul rest in peace.
