The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it. Books can teach you important lessons of life that no experience can. These are not the only books that you should be reading during your high school, I’m sure the list is extensive but because I couldn’t include all of them, I tried to mention the ones that I feel are important books to read for teens. And I’d suggest you find the ones that are not included in any list.
7 books to read for teens during high school:
One of the finest and most popular writings by William Shakespeare which has a place even in 21st century. Classics have their own place no matter what century we are living in. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare creates a world of violence and conflict in which two young people fall in love and die because of that love. The language used by Shakespeare is one of the salient parts of the book. I believe this is one of the best books to read for teens as well as for college students.
This is a story of a mysterious millionaire, Jay Gatsby who holds extravagant parties but never participate in them. The novel is narrated by Nick Caraway, a Yale graduate, and veteran of the great war from the Midwest. He lives in a small house on Long Island, in a fictional village of West Egg, next door to the lavish mansion of Jay Gatsby. The story revolves around the whole strategy of impressing Daisy Buchanan to attend one of his parties. Despite the accommodated wealth, find out why this celebrated and young man has a funeral that nobody.
Animal Farm is an allegory for the events of the Russian revolution,1917 by George Orwell. In this novel, Orwell condemned Stalinist era of Soviet Union, has described Stalin’s brutal dictatorship and reign of terror. How uniquely and artistically this novel has described an important event in the history makes it one of the highly recommended books to read for teens.
During my sophomore year of college, I stumbled upon this novel in the library and since then it has become one of my favorite reads. Written by Harper Lee, this novel has won the Pulitzer Prize, for it captures the harsh racism towards African-Americans. The young narrator, Jean Louise Finch, throws light on rape and racial inequality allowing the reader to see the unpleasant and wicked reality of human nature set in Alabama. I believe this book is something that should be there on your must-read books list.
This novel by Ray Bradbury is set in a future dystopian society where people are fired if they are found reading or stashing books in their house. The story revolves around one such fireman, Montag, who is discontented with his life after meeting her neighbor Clarisse McClellan who is liberal in her thoughts and lives every bit of life and loves meaningful conversations and people around her. This novel I believe everybody during their high school should read.
Written by author John Steinbeck, the story revolves around the lives and friendship of two men, George and Lennie who dream of settling down one day on their own land which is impossible to achieve. What makes the story an interesting one is his dog and Curley’s wife.
The story revolves around the British boys who were left stranded on a secluded island after their airplane crashed, and when they tried to work in a group in order to survive. Since they had no rules, and the boys were young and aggressive, conflicts became violent and they turned against each other. Golding threw light on the loss of innocence, civilisation, human evilness etc by using symbols such as the beast and the conch. According to me, this is one of the must-read books for teens.
