ALA does get converted into EPA and DHA but not more 1% of it. People haven’t noticed but doctors recommend taking EPA and DHA supplements to pregnant women so that the unborn child gets a brain boost. Several studies have shown that brain development has no age, while it is also true that children learn faster than adults and it is highly recommended to give them a proper dosage of EPA and DHA.
I recommend eating fatty fish at least twice a week, to fulfill your EPA and DHA requirements. If you cannot eat fatty fish, then go for a supplement. Adults can take 600 milligrams of EPA and DHA combined per day, while children an take about 200 milligrams of EPA and DHA combined per day. Pregnant women are advised to take 800 grams of PA and DHA combined per day.
Take note: These dosages are well within the limits (on the lower side), in fact, up to 3000 mg of EPA and DHA is safe, and going beyond that is not recommended.
