Here’s how to provide parental support to beat exam stress

Mandeep Gill 0

Fear, dedication, nervousness, confidence and the list is endless, your children are experiencing one or more of these things if it’s the exam time. Apart from managing their emotions and keeping them away from stress, you also have some other duties towards your child’s exam preparations. A child’s journey of exams needs parental support more than you realize. You should give serious thought to what parents should do during exams to help their child in the most effective way possible. Because it takes more than just studying to get good marks and learn important lessons of life while doing it.

The right parental support to beat exam stress:

parental support

  • Parents should know the syllabus more than the child

If your child is weak on any topic or any subject, he/she would not tell you about it when it’s exam time. As a result, that particular area will get neglected and you might fail to identify your child’s weak spot until it’s too late. If you know everything that is there in the course, you can then guide your children better, and make sure nothing gets left out. This is the parental support you must not ignore to ensure timely completion of course.

  • Parents should devise a study plan

Every student has his/her favorite subject. If you don’t pay attention, they might end up studying what they like, and not what they are weak at. They will revise things they have already mastered several times. This happens because they are afraid of studying what isn’t as clear to them as the other topics are. This could negatively impact their performance in exams. It could also lead to an even bigger problem in future. After 1 or 2 years, they won’t be able to understand advanced topics because their basics weren’t cleared in the past. It is parents’ duty to carefully devise such a study plan that balances strong and weak topics, with enough revisions.

This is a parental support that stays all year round, not just during the exams. But if you’re working parents, don’t let that affect your child’s studies. • Make sure you gather the essentials to avoid last minute panic

While almost every parent is already doing that, still it is worth mentioning. Last moment things don’t really play well to your advantage. Pencil box, with scales, compass, and other small but crucial things should be prepared the night before exams and not hours before exams. It has happened to me recently. I was supposed to submit a passport photo in the exam hall, the same one which I uploaded on the website while applying for the exam. I was under the impression that I had that photo in my wallet, but I didn’t and came to know about it only hours before the exam. We had to search the whole house for that exact same photo, I did find it, but it ruined my exam mode. Instead of feeling confident, I was feeling worried and scared.

If that can to an adult like me, it can surely mess with your child’s psychological conditions. Don’t take that chance, and provide the right parental support to your child.

  • Don’t let them take any test the day before exams

A day before the exams is only meant for revision, not tests. Tests are meant to find shortcomings and work to eliminate them. Your child should not find any shortcomings he can’t afford to eliminate due to lack of time. Those shortcomings will only negatively impact the exam performance as the child will enter the hall with nervousness.

  • Give them at least 7 to 8-hour sleep

Not just for the night before exams, but for every night. Your child should be sleeping for at least 7-8 hours. I have also mentioned this in 5 ways to keep your child stress-free during examsA good night’s sleep will lower the stress hormone (cortisol) and bring up the feel-good hormone (serotonin). Also, the human brain saves the information to a more permanent location and free up space for new information during sleep.  With enough sleep, the child will perform at his maximum potential, be it studies or exams. This is what parents should do during exams, and even before/after exams so that the brain works efficiently and effectively.

  • Feed them with proper nutrition

The human body is just like any other machinery. If you don’t maintain it, the desired results cannot be expected. Your child’s brain is in developing stage, feeding them proper nutrients ensures that they reach their full potential in future. If you can, feed your children with fatty fish twice a week as it has essential fats for the development of new brain cells (EPA and DHA). EPA and DHA supplements are also available in the pharmacies if you can’t eat fish. Almonds, walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, peanut butter also contribute to brain development. It is recommended to add these to your child’s diet. Read more about EPA and DHA so make an informed decision.

  • Focus on next paper instead of complaining about the previous one

No one can always ace all the papers. If your child had a bad day at the exam, he would be sad and discouraged which might affect the preparation for the next paper. Sometimes, parents also scold kids for not doing good. First, you need to understand, what’s done is done and it’s best that the kid focuses on next paper without any regrets. Then you need to make sure the kid understands this and get over his bad day as soon as possible. One bad paper should not affect the rest. Encourage your children to do better.
